Behaviour Support Practitioners

A Day in the Life of PBS

  • Start your day by reviewing client files and preparing for appointments.

  • Attend a house visit to conduct a holistic assessment of a new client, evaluating their behaviour and environment to identify support needs.

  • Head back to the office for writing and developing a Positive Behaviour Support Plan (PBSP) for a client.

  • Facilitate an online training session for parents and caregivers on effectively implementing the PBSP.

  • Attend a monthly meeting with implementing providers at their location to review the progress of behaviour support plans and make necessary adjustments.

  • Guide a service provider on using restrictive practices and reporting requirements via phone.

Wrap up the day by updating client records, ensuring all information is accurate and securely stored.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Demonstrated understanding of Positive Behaviour Support principles, including functional behaviour assessments, development of behaviour support plans, and implementation processes.

  • Well-developed understanding of trauma-informed practice.

  • Proven experience or willingness to learn about delivering behaviour support services to children with diverse needs, particularly within the NDIS framework.

  • Strong understanding and commitment to neuro-affirming practices.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with children, families, and support teams/

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage a flexible schedule.

  • Reliable transportation and a valid driver's license for travel between meetings.

Demonstrated experience in providing disability supports, including working with individuals with complex behaviours.

How to apply to become a practitioner

Registration with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission as a Behaviour Support Practitioner (or willingness to obtain it, which can take up to 8 weeks).

 

You must be employed by a reigstered provider to submit an application. 

 

There are two types of application pathways:

  • Self-assessment pathway for practitioners who can complete the self-assessment process, which includes providing a portfolio of evidence against the framework.

  • Alternative assessment pathway for new entry-level behaviour support practitioners with limited portfolio evidence. This fact sheet guides how to complete the alternative assessment process.
